Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport continues to lead by example with the installation of 109 Heliox fast chargers that will support a new fleet of electric buses for the facility.
Transportation services provider Connexxion (Transdev) inked the deal with charging solution provider Heliox to power the largest single fleet of opportunity charged electric buses in the world at the Schiphol Airport, where it will be used to charge 100 of VDL Citea’s SLFA Electric buses.
The project consists of 23 Heliox 450kW Opportunity chargers that are designed for charging while the buses are in operation but stopped along the route, and will deliver a charge in 2 to 4 minute bursts. The system was designed to utilize high power chargers during a shift to extend the functional range of the buses, while 84 Heliox Fast DC dual 30 kW chargers provide overnight charging for buses during slow periods. The overnight chargers have been installed at bus depots in Amsterdam and Amstelveen.
In addition, Heliox opportunity chargers offer charging en-route, and recharging as passengers board and exit the buses. The roof-mounted system has proven to be reliable and robust, and uses a pantograph mounted on the bus, including remote management to ensure high uptime throughout the operation. Overnight charging, using 84 Heliox Fast DC dual 30kW chargers, can be performed at depots in Amsterdam and Amstelveen.
The director of airport operations at the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, Miriam Hoekstra-van der Deen, shared her excitement about the deal:

Schiphol Airport has helped drive this project forward with great enthusiasm and we are very happy that we have been able to contribute to it. Ultimately, we want Schiphol to be climate-neutral by 2040. This partnership with Connexxion and the Transport Region is a huge step toward this goal.”
The new fleet will run at all hours of the day across six primary routes around the airport. The charging infrastructure was designed to optimize the functionality of the buses across the very fixed schedule that they run on. Interestingly, the system utilizes opportunity chargers at both ends of routes to give fleet operators maximum flexibility.
